What is osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a philosophy discovered in 1855 by Andrew Taylor Still. By observing the complete work of nature in the form of the human body, the philosophy of osteopathy was developed, taught and practiced.

Osteopathically, the body is viewed as a complete machine, designed so that every bone has a place, purpose and function. When all the bones in our body are in the right place, the body will function in a normal state, free from symptoms. If a bone is not in the right place, the body will function in an abnormal state and symptoms will be present.

The practice of osteopathy is a hands on manual therapy. Osteopaths uses their hands to collect information on how a body is moving and functioning. With a thorough knowledge of how the body works, an osteopath can reason their way from a patient's symptoms (effect) to determine the part of the body requiring treatment (cause).

What to expect

An osteopathic treatment begins by taking a thorough case history, followed by osteopathic assessment, diagnosis, osteopathic treatment and management.

As osteopathy is a philosophy, the approach to treatment amongst osteopaths varies greatly. Each treatment is tailored to each individual patient and no two treatments are ever the same. The patient, and their unique make-up of symptoms, remain centred to the treatment experience.

Rosie's approach to treatment at Footscray Osteopathy is gentle, in the lineage of teaching from Traditional, Biodynamic and Cranial Osteopathy. Rosie does not perform any 'cracking' manipulations in her treatments.

A typical treatment involves sitting or laying down on the treatment table, then Rosie will use her hands to diagnose the condition of how various parts of your body move - in their parts and as a whole - to determine where movement is normal and where there are restrictions. These movements and restrictions may be subtle or substantial. Once determining how your body moves, she will reason on how any abnormal movements may be contributing to the patient's presenting symptoms.

The treatment itself adjusts bones into their right place by manipulating the surrounding tissues such as ligaments, fascia and muscle, and in turn, influence vascular, endocrine and nerve pathways.

Practising on the unceded land of the Wurrundjeri people, Footscray Osteopathy acknowledges the Wurrundjeri people as the original carers and healers of this land.
